Afaik the weflash image for first installation isn't a real os flash. It just to make it possible that you can flash the real dd-wrt image because you cant flash dd-wrt from stock rom. So maybe you just have to flash a different dd wrt rm image and it works. I got back from my trip, found a 3.3V USB-RS232 converter and reflashed the WNR3500L through the CFE with the current dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_mini-WNR3500L.chk file as listed in the database. I then flashed dd-wrt.v24-14311_NEWD-2_K2.6_std_usb_ftp.bin (from Linux, with Iceweasel/Firefox), and that seems to work fine too.
